Stephen ColbertĀ just took a page out of PresidentĀ Donald TrumpāsĀ playbook while mocking theĀ State of the Union.
Trump hasĀ frequently insultedĀ Colbert and other popular late night hosts for having low television ratings and has called for those hostsā shows to be canceled.Ā But on Thursday, Colbert jabbed Trump for his low viewership during his State of the Union address earlier this week.
āThe Nielsen ratings for his speech are in. Trumpās talk-a-thon saw an 11% decrease from last year. Donald Trump is really dragging down broadcast television,ā Colbert said on āThe Late Show.ā
āI mean, if I were CBS, Iād cancel him,ā he quipped.
Colbert was referencing Paramountās announcement that it wouldĀ be canceling the āLate ShowāĀ starting in May. Colbert and other criticsĀ have spoken outĀ against the move, suggesting that theĀ Trump administration may have influenced Paramountās decision.
Colbert then touted his own television ratings during Tuesdayās State of the Union compared to last yearās.
āBut you know, linear television is doomed, and everyoneās ratings are going down, right? Iām sorry. Whatās that? Our ratings were up 7%?ā he said.
āIām up 7%. Wow. Holy cow. You know what? You know what I think is going on? People may not like watching Trump, but they do like watching me, not like watching Trump,ā Colbert said as the audience chanted āStephen.ā
āPreliminary viewership for Trumpās speech is coming in around 32.6 million. Compare that to the Super Bowl, which got over four times as much,ā he added.
