Trump Administration Intensifies Pressure on Cuba and Iran Amidst Congressional Scrutiny
The Donald Trump administration has intensified its energy quarantine against Cuba, aiming to destabilize the communist government, which experts believe is at a breaking point. This fuel blockade exacerbates Cuba‘s long-standing economic crisis, leading to critical shortages of water, food, and medicine for its 10 million citizens. SebastiĂĄn Arcos, interim director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University, noted the regime faces multiple epidemics and increasing repression, suggesting its survival is unlikely despite its historical resilience.
President Trump recently floated the idea of a âfriendly takeoverâ in Cuba, drawing parallels to the US approach in Venezuela. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is spearheading this strategy and reportedly met with RaĂșl Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, grandson and bodyguard of de facto leader RaĂșl Castro, who is believed to control GAESA, a powerful conglomerate managing much of the island’s economy. The meeting, which occurred on the sidelines of the regional Caricom conference in St. Kitts and Nevis, saw Rubio signal that while the administration demands change in Havana, it’s not pushing for immediate regime overthrow.
Concurrently, the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Secretary Rubio had briefed the âGang of Eightââkey congressional leadersâprior to the strikes, fulfilling the notification requirement under the 1947 National Security Act, as interpreted by previous administrations. President Trump monitored the situation from Mar a Lago, conferring with Prime Minister Netanyahu.
The strikes against Iran immediately sparked debate over presidential war powers, with critics like Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna questioning the authorization without full congressional approval. They planned to force a vote to restrict the President’s ability to launch such strikes. Amidst this, Rubio announced Iran‘s designation as a state sponsor of wrongful detention, warning of further potential measures, including restrictions on US passport travel to the country, if Iran‘s actions do not cease.
