A disruption at a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing on Capitol Hill on Wednesday led to the removal and arrest of a protester, drawing attention to tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The protester, identified as Brian McGinnis, a Marine Corps veteran and Green Party candidate in North Carolina’s Senate race, interrupted the hearing approximately 30 minutes after it began. Senior military officials had been delivering testimony regarding U.S. military readiness when McGinnis, dressed in a military uniform, stood and began shouting objections to the war.

During the interruption, McGinnis criticized U.S. involvement in the conflict, declaring, ā€œAmerica does not want to send its sons and daughters to war for Israel.ā€ U.S. Capitol Police officers quickly moved to escort him out of the hearing room. Video footage later shared with CBS News by an antiwar activist appears to show McGinnis struggling as officers attempted to remove him.

As the situation escalated near the doorway, Republican Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana stepped down from the dais and assisted officers in removing McGinnis. Sheehy helped lift the protester and guide him out of the chamber as officers worked to restore order.

During the struggle, McGinnis’ left hand appeared to become caught between the door and its frame. Sheehy appeared to attempt to free the hand while others in the room accused the senator of causing the injury. When asked if he was alright, McGinnis responded that he was not. Officers ultimately escorted him into the hallway, where he could be heard saying that his left arm had been broken.

Mark Elbourno, a Green Party official managing McGinnis’ campaign, later said McGinnis had been arrested and transported to George Washington University Hospital. Elbourno stated that he was unsure of McGinnis’ condition but denied that the candidate had assaulted police officers.

U.S. Capitol Police, however, said McGinnis faces several charges, including assaulting officers, resisting arrest, and obstructing passageways during the hearing. The incident briefly halted the proceedings before the hearing resumed.
