The wife of Jim Baird, Danise Baird, died early Sunday morning from complications related to severe injuries she sustained in a hit-and-run crash earlier this year. She had been recovering from more than a dozen fractures suffered in the January accident.
The crash occurred on January 5 while the congressman and his wife were traveling back to Washington, D.C.. At the time, both were hospitalized after what was described as a serious collision. Despite the severity of the accident, initial reports suggested the couple was expected to recover. Donald J. Trump referenced the incident ahead of a House Republican policy retreat the following day, saying the couple had been involved in a āpretty badā crash but were initially believed to be āgoing to be okay.ā
On Sunday morning, Congressman Bairdās office confirmed Danise Bairdās death in a statement honoring her life and long marriage to the Indiana lawmaker.
āCongressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service,ā the statement read. āA devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.ā
The couple, described as high school sweethearts in the congressmanās official biography, shared three children together and maintained a long-standing commitment to family and community throughout Bairdās public career.
Following the crash, both Jim and Danise Baird were hospitalized. The congressman, 80, was released from the hospital on January 6 but was required to wear a neck brace for several weeks during his recovery. Danise Baird, who had suffered 15 fractures and breaks in the accident, remained hospitalized longer and was discharged on January 12, according to updates from their son, Beau Baird.
Beau Bairdāwho later succeeded his father in the Indiana State Legislature seat when Jim Baird was elected to Congressāhad periodically shared updates on his parentsā recovery. In a February 1 post, he wrote that his mother had taken her āfirst assisted stepsā since the crash, expressing cautious optimism while acknowledging that āthereās still a road ahead.ā
He also noted that he had focused most updates on his father because his mother preferred privacy and faced a long recovery process.
On Sunday, Beau posted a brief message marking the moment of her passingāā3/1/26 6:31:10 amāāshortly before his fatherās office formally confirmed her death, according to reporting by the New York Post. Danise Bairdās death brings a tragic end to what had been a hopeful recovery following the devastating crash.
