Trump Floats ‘Friendly Takeover’ of Cuba Amid High-Level Talks
President Donald Trump revealed Friday that the United States is actively engaged in high-level discussions with Cuba, suggesting the contentious possibility of what he termed a “friendly takeover” of the communist-run island. Addressing reporters outside the White House before a trip to Texas, Trump indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was leading these conversations with Cuban officials. The president painted a grim picture of Cuba’s current state, declaring it “a failed nation” with “no money,” and claiming “They want our help.” He repeated the phrase “friendly takeover” moments later, emphasizing its potential. However, Trump provided no clarification on what he meant by this phrase, and the White House declined requests for additional details.
Trump’s surprising comments came just two days after a significant violent incident off Cuba’s north coast. The Cuban government reported that a Florida-registered speedboat, carrying ten armed Cubans originating from the United States, opened fire on Cuban soldiers. This confrontation led to four of the armed Cubans being killed and six injured in return fire, with one Cuban official also wounded. Following the shooting, Cuban authorities confirmed they were communicating with U.S. officials. Rubio further corroborated that both the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding a layer of tension and complexity to the diplomatic landscape.
