Shadows of Scandal: Rep. Omar’s Campaign, a $250M Fraud, and Trump’s Fiery Condemnations

New details have emerged connecting Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to individuals recently convicted in a massive child nutrition program fraud scheme, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s plans to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali immigrants in Minnesota. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced convictions in January against the co-owner of Safari Restaurant and a former mayoral aide. These individuals were part of an extensive scheme, operating between April 2020 and January 2022, that exploited a federal program designed to feed children during the Covid-19 pandemic. Millions of dollars intended for meal reimbursements were laundered for self-enrichment. While the DOJ has not accused Omar of wrongdoing, it noted her prior interactions with some implicated individuals.

The fraud involved claiming reimbursements for unserved meals and leveraging “ghost” businesses within Minnesota’s Somali community to channel funds. Key figures include Abdulkadir Nur Salah, co-owner of Safari Restaurant, which received over $16 million in fraudulent funds. Abdi Nur Salah registered Stigma-Free International, a non-profit used to execute the scheme across multiple Minnesota cities. Rep. Omar’s association stems from campaigning at Safari Restaurant, which also contributed approximately $4,700 to her campaign (2021-2022). A video shows Omar praising Safari Restaurant’s role in feeding children, remarks made before fraud allegations became public. The restaurant is now under federal scrutiny as part of an alleged $250 million fraud scheme.

These revelations coincide with controversial remarks by President Trump, who lambasted the Somali community, asserting the U.S. would be “better off” without them, calling their country “garbage.” He directly linked his criticism to federal prosecutions in Minnesota, noting dozens of individuals, many Somali nationals, were charged in the extensive pandemic-era child-nutrition program fraud scheme. He further stated, “When they come from hell and they complain and do nothing but b—-, we don’t want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it.” Rep. Omar swiftly condemned Trump’s comments, labeling him “creepy” and “obsessed” in response to his inflammatory statements.
