America’s ‘Armada’: US Military Buildup Near Iran Triggers Alarm
The United States has significantly intensified its military presence near Iran, prompting alarm as President Donald Trump reportedly considers military action, dubbing the extensive deployment an “armada.” While official objectives remain undisclosed, the buildup showcases a formidable display of naval and air power. Initially, the force included the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by three guided-missile warships. These vessels, equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles—previously used in strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities—also carry advanced air defense systems. Onboard aircraft like F-35 stealth fighters and F/A-18 attack aircraft are positioned within striking distance of targets inside Iran.
Further augmenting its regional footprint, the U.S. recently dispatched a second aircraft carrier strike group, centered around the USS Gerald R. Ford, alongside three destroyers. This addition brings the total number of destroyers in the broader region to 13. Concurrently, air assets have been concentrated at strategic hubs, notably the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in eastern Jordan. This base now hosts over 60 attack aircraft, including new electronic warfare jets designed to jam radar. Satellite imagery confirms the presence of at least five MQ-9 Reaper drones, underscoring advanced surveillance and strike capabilities.
Air reinforcement extends to Israel, with 11 F-22 stealth fighter jets deployed to the Ovda air base. Flight tracking and satellite data indicate a broader movement of diverse aircraft, including refueling and reconnaissance planes, into the region. To bolster support for forces in the Middle East, dozens of tanker and cargo aircraft have been repositioned from the United States to bases across Europe. The Pentagon has also enhanced ground defenses, dispatching additional Patriot and THAAD air defense systems to protect the estimated 30,000 to 40,000 U.S. troops from potential retaliatory strikes by Iranian missiles.
Strategic long-range bombers stationed in the United States, capable of striking targets in Iran, are currently on a heightened alert status, a directive issued by President Trump in January. Furthermore, special operations, surveillance, and refueling aircraft have been deployed to the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean, a crucial forward deployment airfield for B-2 stealth bombers. This significant military escalation has drawn serious concerns from Capitol Hill. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) publicly demanded clarification from the administration regarding its objectives, following a classified briefing that left many lawmakers uneasy about the developing situation.
