President Donald Trump has endorsed former U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme as the next United States senator from Montana, praising the longtime prosecutor as a strong advocate for law enforcement and conservative priorities.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described Alme as “a highly respected criminal prosecutor” and a graduate of Harvard Law School who possesses the “wisdom and courage” necessary to uphold law and order. The president emphasized Alme’s commitment to supporting law enforcement officers, members of the military, and veterans.
Trump also outlined the policy priorities he believes Alme would champion in the Senate, including economic growth, tax and regulatory reductions, support for farmers and ranchers, and the expansion of domestic energy production. He added that Alme would work to strengthen border security, address migrant-related crime, and defend Second Amendment rights.
“Kurt Alme is an exceptional person and will do a fantastic job as your next United States Senator from the great state of Montana,” Trump wrote, expressing confidence that Alme would not disappoint voters.
Trump noted that outgoing Sen. Steve Daines played a key role in the transition, saying Daines had done a job “few others are capable of doing” before choosing to “pass the torch” to Alme, who previously served as U.S. attorney in Montana during Trump’s first administration. Trump added that Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte and Sen. Tim Sheehy have also voiced support for Alme’s candidacy.
Alme was unanimously confirmed as U.S. attorney in September 2017 and served until December 2020. After leaving the role, he became Montana’s state budget director under Gianforte and most recently worked as executive vice president at the National Christian Foundation.
In a statement to the Daily Montanan, Alme said he is running to represent Montana’s values in Washington and to support Trump’s policy agenda. “We need proven leaders who will stand up for our values without apology,” he said. “I’m running for Senate to be a relentless advocate for Montana and to help President Trump put America first.”
Daines announced earlier that he will not seek reelection after what he described as careful consideration, joining several lawmakers stepping away from Congress ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
